Course Description:
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the richness, depth and diversity of the Spanish Culture. Through visits to historical sites, churches, and museums, as well as, through lectures, home stay experiences and interaction with local leaders; students will have an opportunity to explore first hand the rich historical, cultural and social elements that define Spanish society today.

From a historical perspective Spain have often represented the “motherland” for many Latin American countries. Understanding the elements that connects us with Spain (both positive and negative) are important to fully understand the Latino cultural experiences in the Americas. As we prepare our students to provide professional services to the growing Latino population in the United States (50.5 million – 16% of the total population) its critical that we examine some of the cultural elements that have left an indelible mark in understanding of the Latin American persona.

Elements such as history, religion, architecture, art, music, family patterns of interaction, attitudes towards work and peer relationships as well as view on politics and government are some of the elements that will be considered as part of this course.
