Program Description:

Course participants will learn how to teach English as a second or foreign language, within the very diverse context of Indonesia! Students will gain the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to address the needs of English learners. In this cross-cultural offering of this course, students will work with English learners of all ages, in settings including an international school, and Muslim, Hindu and Christian Indonesian schools. Participants will also complete coursework alongside Indonesian English teachers, with the opportunity to build lifelong friendships. Course activities include group work, projects and teaching on the islands of Java and Bali.

Faculty Biography:

Dr. Jan Dormer has worked in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) around the globe, including 5 years in Brazil, 1 in Kenya, and 8 in Indonesia, and is now Associate Professor of TESOL in Messiah’s education department. During her time in Indonesia, Dr. Dormer trained English teachers, set up ESL programs in an international school, and taught English in a Muslim elementary school. She authored the book “Teaching English in Missions: Effectiveness and Integrity”. Dr. Dormer is passionate about being the light of Christ in gracious and loving ways through the teaching of English abroad.
