Program Description:
The Costa Rica cross-cultural course is a pure general education offering that seeks to expose the student to the people, culture and ways of life of this amazingly diverse country.  The base of operations is a former Bible institute in the capitol city of San Jose.  Three excursions are included:  one to the Caribbean coast; one to a cloud forest; and one to the Pacific coast.  Students will also enjoy a five-night homestay.  While Spanish is not required it is very helpful.  Many of the guest speakers are involved in service or ministry.  See the INFO sheet for more information.
Estimated Course Fee: $3,150

Faculty Biographies:

Dr. Bob Kilmer, leads the course and has a different faculty colleague each year.  He has taught business, information systems, mathematics and statistics courses at Messiah College for 16 years.  He helped to lead the Costa Rica cross-cultural with Dr LaFrance in 2012.  The organization and structure of this year’s trip is essentially the same as it was for the past four years.

Dr. John Bechtold has had multiple experiences in Costa Rica as a missions leader and as a Cross-cultural leader. One of his main roles at Messiah besides his responsibilities as the Chair of the Psychology Department and Professor in the department is his role as a leader of cross-cultural orientations for all students studying abroad for a semester and/or going on 3-week cross-culturals. He loves interacting with international students and loves to encourage US students to learn experientially about other cultures whether here in the United States (He leads a Cross-cultural course to the Amish each summer) or in cultures abroad (He has led courses to over six different countries).
