Program Description:

Course Description:
An introduction to the history, archaeology, and culture of modern Greece through readings, travel, and archaeological work. We will spend time staying in the
Greece CC 2020capital city (Athens), traveling to important sites in central Greece, and living for two weeks in the village of Ancient Corinth. In Corinth, we will conduct research related to an archaeological gazetteer of sites in the region, produce virtual reality videos for educational purposes, investigate a vanished refugee colony known as Washingtonia, and conduct drone photography of the Isthmus. Our class will benefit from the participation of Dr. Abaz Kryemadhi (Associate Professor of Physics at Messiah), and a collaboration with a Geospatial Technology team from Harrisburg University of Science and Technology (directed by Professor Albert Sarvis).

Faculty Biography:

David Pettegrew is Professor of History and Archaeology at Messiah College and Co-chair of the Department of History. His teaching and research interests have centered on the cities and landscapes of ancient Greece and Cyprus, the archaeology of early Christianity, and the Roman period in the Mediterranean. David lived in Greece for two years and has visited the country numerous times over the last two decades.

Abaz Kryemadhi is Associate Professor of Physics at Messiah College. A native of Albania, the country northwest of Greece, Abaz attended the University of Tirana before completing his doctorate at Indiana University. Abaz is well familiar with Greece through frequent visits to family in the country and two previous cross-cultural courses at Messiah College.
