2 Continents and 2 Countries in one trip!
This May-term course explores the remarkably diverse cultural history of Turkey from its ancient past to its modern present. Through field-based examination of
biblical archaeological sites in western and central Turkey and in the Greek isles, we will learn about the influence of the Greco-Roman culture on the early Christian movement while also examining other historical periods, including early settlements in Anatolya, the Byzantine (Christian) Empire, and the Ottoman (Islamic) Empire. In order to provide a unique glimpse into both the secular and Islamic worlds of modern-day Turkey, students will also get to participate in a five-day home stay in modern Izmir (ancient Smyrna).
